CHAINMAIL - OTHER JEWELLERY

All chainmail jewellery on this site is currently created using nickel silver plated rings only.

Chainmail (also known as Chainmaille) is the ancient art of linking rings together. The earliest finds have been dated back to the 4th century BC. It was traditionally used to make protective armor, but is now most commonly used to make jewellery.

There are 4 main categories of chainmail: European, Japanese, Persian and Hybrid.

The most common family is the European, of which the European 4-1 was most widely used for armor in ancient Europe, and is the most well known of all weaves today.

The Japanese weaves were traditionally used in Japan, mainly for joining sections of armor plates together. Usually a smaller ring size was used than the European types.

The Persian weave has a misleading name. There is actually no evidence to suggest this weave was ever used in Persia to create armor or jewellery. Most of these weaves were created in modern times to make jewellery.

The Hybrid weaves are all the other miscellaneous weaves.
